Solo Mio

Solo Mio is a classic love story with heart. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Italy, it follows a journey from embarrassment, loneliness, and pessimism to rediscovering that spark for love, joy, and adventure. At its core, the film is a rallying cry to reclaim your sense of purpose… to lean into curiosity, growth, and the possibility that life can surprise you when you least expect it.

This isn’t an art-house film, but it could be your new favorite rom-com. The writing is solid and there are some genuinely pleasant surprises woven throughout. I won’t spoil the surprise (especially for those who haven’t seen clips floating around online), but let’s just say my mom’s favorite tenor makes a pretty meaningful cameo. The music choices fit well. Yes, even the somewhat random Ed Sheeran concert moment. Matt’s a fan?! It works.

Nicole Grimaudo is a pleasant surprise, bringing real heart to the film. Her energy is infectious at times, but it’s her emotional range that truly sells the love story. She makes you believe in the connection and the stakes. Kevin James is fun and surprisingly endearing in the lead role, and the rest of the cast adds just the right amount of sugar and spice to round everything out.

The pacing feels right, the editing is clean, and the comedic timing lands. It took my theater about a third of the movie to remember they were allowed to laugh, but once they did, the energy shifted in the best way. The story was a bit predictable, but there were some good twists. As for the cinematography, Italy does a lot of the heavy lifting. It’s gorgeous. While nothing felt groundbreaking visually, there were a few crane shots that stood out. Overall, though, it plays things a bit safe.

If you’re looking to laugh, maybe tear up a little, and root for an unsuspecting hero, Kevin James delivers a performance that might surprise you. Solo Mio is worth seeing in theaters, especially if you’re in the mood for a feel-good story about finding your way back to yourself (while finding new love).
